After losing $3,000 in crops, John Davas built a dike near Dalkena high enough to turn back the spring flood—and stout enough to protect his neighbors.
“Mr. Davaz says that the cost of the improvement was about $1200, and he considers the money spent a good investment, as he lost crops valued at $3000 the past year.”
The 'coal strike' on the Dieder place near Dalkena is bigger than first reported — eight feet wide instead of three — and Newport is already dreaming of a mine, a spur, cheaper fuel and a new town tributary to its own.
“The development of a good coal mine as close to Newport as the Dieder ranch is located would mean the building of another town in this section that would be tributary to Newport, as well as furnish cheaper coal to those who use it in this place.”
Engineers began staking a route down the Pend Oreille River, with Newport yards and valley development hanging on the survey.
“The extension down the river means a great deal of activity in Newport this summer, and the building of the railroad will develop the magnificent resources of the valley which have so long lain dormant awaiting the arrival of transportation.”
