The Heifer-Hunting Beast of Kamilche

A two-year-old cow goes missing, and a hunting party tracks a massive cougar to its end.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

On Sunday, John Sanders, who lives two miles below Kamilche, missed one of his cows, a fine 2-year-old heifer. After a search, he found her carcass, half eaten, with large cougar tracks all around. Sanders sent word to F. Mossman, who arrived early the next morning. After a short search, his dogs treed the cougar, and Mossman killed him. The cougar was taken to Kamilche, where it was viewed by a large crowd. It was seven feet two inches in length and weighed 275 pounds.

“The cougar was taken to Kamilche, where it was viewed by a large crowd.”

While urban sprawl has pushed apex predators deep into the Cascades, the tension between livestock owners and cougars remains a vivid, ongoing struggle in the rural outskirts of Washington.
