A young woman fends off an intruder who attempted to drug her in her own bedroom.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Burglars are working on Queen Anne hill and have visited several houses. On Thursday night, the residence of W. H. Shoudy, at 212 Temperance street, was entered, and the same night the house of Dr. L. W. Carpenter, at 515 Banner street, was also visited, but in both instances the thieves were frightened away before they succeeded in stealing anything of value. The burglar who visited the home of Mr. Shoudy gained entrance to the dwelling by means of a window. After cleverly searching the room upstairs without disturbing the occupants, the thief went downstairs and entered a rear bedroom, where Miss Mary Shoudy, who is ill, was sleeping. The young woman was awakened by someone holding her wrist, and she called out, 'Who is it?' Her only answer was a low, 'Sh! Keep quiet!' The girl sat up and, noticing that her visitor was a man with a dark, villainous face, she screamed for help. Mr. Shoudy was downstairs in a moment, but the thief was gone. Miss Shoudy felt a choking sensation in the throat and, when she recovered from her fright, found near a cloth saturated with chloroform. The burglar was endeavoring to make her inhale the fumes of the drug when she fortunately awoke and put him to flight.
“The burglar was endeavoring to make her inhale the fumes of the drug when she fortunately awoke and put him to flight.”
Residential burglaries remain a common concern, but the Victorian-era use of chloroform as a home-invasion tool adds a chillingly cinematic element that highlights the vulnerability of the domestic space then and now.
