A Child's Fatal Accident Near Palouse

A twelve-year-old boy is killed instantly after falling from a wagon.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Haden Kulick, 12 years old, was killed near Palouse City September 10. He was riding on the running gears of a wagon, on the reach, when suddenly the wheel dropped into a ditch, breaking the reach and throwing young Kulick violently to the ground. A wheel passed over his head, the skull was crushed terribly and the brain oozed out of the gaping wound. Death was instantaneous.

“The skull was crushed terribly and the brain oozed out of the gaping wound.”

Accidents involving primitive farm equipment were common in the rural development of the inland Northwest in the late 19th century. This report reflects the blunt, clinical style of the era's crime and accident reporting.
