The Case of 'Doc' Stewart

A young man is headed to the county jail after an altercation in the streets of downtown Seattle.

Harry Stewart, alias Gleason, and commonly known in the southern part of the city as 'Doc,' is a young man who does not show his criminal propensities by looks at least. However, that made no difference to Justice Humphrey yesterday when he became convinced that Stewart had deliberately knocked James Cavanaugh down with a revolver last Sunday morning at the corner of South Third and Washington streets, and had been guilty in the winter months of stealing a silver watch from a second-hand store. He remanded the young man to the county jail for trial in the superior court in default of $500 bonds. Cavanaugh was held as a witness. Stewart is held on the charge of assault with a deadly weapon and admits that he struck Cavanaugh. The evidence shows that Cavanaugh, without provocation, hit him on the nose within ten minutes of the assault.

“Justice Humphrey... became convinced that Stewart had deliberately knocked James Cavanaugh down with a revolver.”
