The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Roland Maian was arrested yesterday by Detective Giddee on a warrant sworn out before Justice Humphrey by Robert Fitzsimmons charging him with larceny. It is alleged that Maian robbed Fitzsimmons of $711 in the Phoenix Hotel on June 18, while the latter was intoxicated. The case will be heard July 8, and meanwhile the defendant is at liberty under $750 bond.

Petty theft and opportunistic crime against vulnerable, intoxicated individuals remains a staple of the police blotter in Downtown Seattle, just as it was in 1893. The Phoenix Hotel, a common setting for such mid-range civic drama, represents the high turnover of lodging that defined the urban frontier.
