The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
E. G. Walker, a mechanic, was arrested this morning at 1:30 o'clock on complaint of W. W. Stewart, the attorney, who claims that Walker knocked him down on Battery street, between Front and West, and tried to rob him. Two citizens came to Stewart's aid and held Walker until Policeman Birdsell was found.
“Walker knocked him down on Battery street, between Front and West, and tried to rob him.”
Battery Street remains a major thoroughfare in Seattle, though the 'Front Street' mentioned (now First Avenue) is now far from the water's edge thanks to decades of regrading and infill. The incident of a pedestrian being accosted in the dark of night is a timeless civic safety concern for downtown residents.
