The Anacortes School Board Scandal

Citizens launch an investigation into the district’s finances following a explosive public expose of school board mismanagement.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Anacortes, Dec. 31 — Publication of the letter written by H. C. Hutton, chairman of the school board, has had the effect of creating a whirlwind in this city. Throughout yesterday school affairs were the topic of conversation, and early in the afternoon about a dozen of the heavier property owners met for the purpose of taking steps which would in future protect the city from a repetition of such disgraces. The business transacted was not made public, but it has been stated on authority that a committee was appointed who will make a thorough investigation of school affairs, beginning their researches back three or four years. This is one of the results of "showing up" a public servant's disgraceful acts. The investigation which is to be made of our school affairs will either have the effect of clearing up many ugly rumors about school matters and thus relieve certain members of the odium resulting from rumors, or it will bring swift and sure punishment to the guilty culprits.

Public oversight of school district funds has been a perennial source of friction in Washington politics for over a century. The Anacortes community's reaction here—calling for a deep-dive audit to clear or condemn public officials—is a blueprint for modern civic accountability battles.
