The Sad Delusions of John Watson
A trainman found living in squalor is committed to Steilacoom Asylum after declaring himself the owner of Victoria’s townsite.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
John Watson, a filthy specimen of humanity, was examined for insanity before Judge Langley yesterday and committed to Steilacoom. Drs. A. M. Burns and Fred W. Sparling made the medical examination and classed his case as melancholia. Watson is 32 years old, was born in Ireland, is married, but has no children. His home is in Wisconsin and his occupation is trainman. His insanity takes the shape of imagining himself a millionaire and the owner of the townsite of Victoria. Nothing seems to be known of his antecedents. Deputy Sheriff Jack McDonald will today take him to Steilacoom. A forced bath and a new suit of clothes will be necessary before he can be moved.
“His insanity takes the shape of imagining himself a millionaire and the owner of the townsite of Victoria.”
In 1894, before the rise of modern psychiatry, conditions like 'melancholia' or 'mania' were often handled through incarceration in state asylums like Steilacoom. Today, Seattle faces a different kind of crisis involving homelessness and mental health, but the struggle to provide humane, dignified care for those experiencing psychotic delusions remains a central, unresolved civic challenge.
