Abandoned North Seattle Home Destroyed by Fire

An unoccupied house in the city's north side was reduced to ash in the early hours of Monday morning.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

A two-story unoccupied frame house, located on the alley between Lombard and Birch and Depot and John streets in North Seattle, was destroyed by fire yesterday morning between the hours of 6 and 7 o'clock. The flames had enveloped the building from top to bottom when discovered, and although the apparatus from house No. 4 responded, nothing could be saved. The house was owned by Mr. McPherson and valued at about $700. The cause of the fire is unknown.

The intersection of these streets in the historic North Seattle neighborhood captures the era's vulnerability to fire, as wooden structures were packed tightly into developing districts. Today, this area has been entirely transformed by the city's northward density, though the risk of structure fires remains a perennial concern in Seattle's housing landscape.
