The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
A mysterious cutting affray happened on the sidewalk at the corner of Cherry and Third streets last Sunday night at 10 o'clock, in which one man was cut twice by his antagonist. According to the story of an eye-witness from a distance, one man cried: 'He is going to cut me,' and just then the man who was with him made a stab at his heart. Again he slashed, and to the witness it looked as if the knife cut the man's face. The man with the knife ran away, and the one who was stabbed suddenly disappeared. Detectives are working on the case.
“He is going to cut me.”
This incident occurred in the heart of what is now the downtown commercial district, near the Pioneer Square and Financial District border. While public safety has evolved, the sense of a 'mysterious' crime occurring on a well-trafficked corner is a familiar archetype in the city's long history of urban street crime reporting.
