Swords at the Wharf: A Case of Mistaken Identity
A peaceful arrival of Knights of Pythias members at the Seattle dock causes an amusing rumor of Fenian invaders.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
On the arrival of the Geo. E. Starr at 2 p.m. today, several gentlemen were observed coming on shore carrying swords. There was nothing particularly warlike in their appearance, still the rumor gained ground that they were the advance guard of the expected Fenians. They were closely scrutinized until a man had the courage to speak to one of the armed band, when it was found that Deputy Supreme Chancellor Osborn and fourteen other members of the Knights of Pythias had come on a peaceful mission. Relief was at once experienced.
“There was nothing particularly warlike in their appearance, still the rumor gained ground that they were the advance guard of the expected Fenians.”
The 'Fenian' scare reflects the acute political anxieties of 1880s Seattle, where rumors of Irish revolutionary movements could easily trigger public concern. It is a reminder of how quickly civic rumor could spiral before modern communications, turning a fraternal social club into a perceived existential threat.
