The Struggle for Housing in Booming Seattle

As Seattle's population surges, new residents struggle to find housing in a city already pushed to its limits.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Large additions are being made to our resident population by immigrants from the east and other places. Besides the number who come in their own conveyances, the stages are crowded with people seeking homes in our midst. The hotels are all filled to their utmost capacity, and there is not a vacant house in town, and newcomers experience considerable difficulty in finding suitable accommodations. Every person, able and willing to work, can find employment and there is no reason why anyone should remain idle. All this shows that we are entering upon an era of prosperity equal to that of any other portion of the country.

“The hotels are all filled to their utmost capacity, and there is not a vacant house in town.”
