The Great Hops Hoax: Tacoma’s ‘Massive’ Landslide Turns Out to Be a Trifle

Panic swept the Sound when reports claimed a catastrophic slide at Tacoma had buried buildings and halted rail traffic. The Dispatch reveals the truth: only twenty acres of land moved, knocking over a few Chinese cabins, while the real drama was just steamers running late.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

LAND SLIDE.—Sensationalists got up a fearful scare yesterday about a land slide at Tacoma and great loss of life. The dispatch reported severe large land slides on the line of the railroad in the vicinity of Tacoma, keeping the train from going to Kahuna until 3 P.M. There is no prospect of a train from Kent before tomorrow morning, and the North Pacific will not be down until Sunday noon. Twenty acres of land come down in front of the depot, carrying away two or three buildings in which people were supposed to be at the time. It is not positively known whether any one has been hurt or not. The arrival of the Zephyr made it a very trifling affair, which knocked over a few Chinese cabins. Only this and nothing more.

In an era before instant digital communication, local newspapers acted as the primary filter for regional panic. This story highlights how 'sensationalists' could turn a minor geological event into a crisis of confidence in infrastructure, forcing editors to step in as fact-checkers to calm the public and protect the reputation of local businesses like the railroad.
