The Disappearing Patient of King County

A small-statured man, well-dressed in slate colors, walks out of the Territorial Insane Asylum and vanishes without a trace.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

On last Friday morning, D. S. Lacy, an inmate of the Territorial Insane Asylum, committed from King county, made his escape, and has not since been heard of. He is a man of small stature, and when he left the asylum was well dressed, wearing a snuff-colored coat and vest, dark pants, and a light slate-colored hat. He usually carries a cane. Any information concerning him should be communicated to the asylum at once.

“He is a man of small stature, and when he left the asylum was well dressed... He usually carries a cane.”

While this brief report from 1878 is a stark reminder of how historical institutions like the Territorial Insane Asylum handled patient 'escapes' with minimal concern for the individual's safety, it also highlights the pre-digital era's reliance on physical descriptions to track people in a growing territory. Today, Seattle’s mental health system faces a different crisis, focusing on the lack of supportive housing and care rather than the criminalized language of 'commitments' and 'escapes.'
