Baseball in the City of Smokestacks
Everett’s amateur baseball scene is in crisis as the city lacks a dedicated field, forcing local fans to travel to Snohomish to watch a 'weird combination' of players.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
A good number of Everett fans traveled to Snohomish Sunday to witness a game between Everett and Snohomish. While the players wore 'E' on their uniforms, it was a weird combination of players from Arlington, Seattle, and other towns rather than a true Everett aggregation. Snohomish defeated Everett after a series of errors, though Everett's Wilson provided a spark with a triple in the ninth inning. It is a disgrace that we allow the game to be killed here; any man with good red sporting blood in his veins must feel like a two-spot when he remembers the glory that former teams brought to the town. It is a nice state of affairs when an Everett team must play all of its games away from home for lack of a ball field. It might be pertinent to inquire if Everett sports are going to allow this to exist indefinitely. If they are not, steps should be taken at once to acquire a ball park that would not be plowed up by some man for a potato patch.
“It is a nice state of affairs when an Everett team must play all of its games away from home for lack of a ball field.”
Everett's long-running struggle to maintain public athletic spaces is highlighted here; the tension between growing industrial needs and the space for community recreation remains a civic argument today.
