Everett Labor Council Gears Up for McNamara Defense
Local unions rally to support the McNamara brothers’ legal fund while clashing with the governor over state labor appointments.
Labor Temple, Friday, Oct. 13, 1911. Council was called to order at 8 p.m., President Olinger presiding. The council authorized the sending of a telegram to Governor Hay urging the retention of Mrs. Mason in the office of assistant state labor commissioner. The record of inefficiency established by Mr. Hubbard was quite thoroughly aired and the opinion expressed was anything but complimentary to the state labor commissioner. Various unions reported their activities, including the purchase of tickets for the McNamara benefit dance and the levying of assessments for the McNamara defense fund. The Labor League held a farewell meeting for Rose B. Moore and a special meeting to send a telegram of protest to Governor Hay.
“The record of inefficiency established by Mr. Hubbard was quite thoroughly aired and the opinion expressed was anything but complimentary.”
The 1911 mobilization for the McNamara defense fund illustrates the intense national solidarity Everett unions felt with labor leaders accused of bombing the Los Angeles Times building. Today, Everett remains a city where labor organization continues to be a central pillar of civic discourse and political pressure.
