Smelter Robbery Leaves Police Baffled

Tacoma authorities search for suspects in a violent hold-up near the smelter, but the trail has gone cold.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The Tacoma police department is making a thorough investigation of the circumstances attending the hold-up at the smelter Tuesday night, but have made no arrests. Whoever the men were, they have disappeared as if the earth had swallowed them. The county officials are awaiting the result of the police investigation before taking any steps in the matter, although the hold-up occurred outside of the police jurisdiction and in that of the sheriff.

“Whoever the men were, they have disappeared as if the earth had swallowed them.”

The Tacoma Smelter was once a massive industrial engine for the city, defining the North End's economy and its toxic legacy. While the smelter operations have long since ceased, the site remains a critical point in local environmental cleanup and urban redevelopment efforts today.
