Star Clothing Co. Forced Out of Business

A prominent Pacific Avenue retailer is closing its doors after being displaced by the sale of their building.

The building occupied by the Star Clothing Co. at 1342 Pacific Ave., as announced in The Times some few days ago, has been purchased by the firm of Williams Bros. The Star Clothing Co. was at once notified to vacate. After spending several days looking for a new location and finding nothing that would in any way answer their purpose, they have decided to quit business in Tacoma. This will mean a great sacrifice, for in order to clear out their immense stock in the short space of time left, they will be obliged to sell everything away below cost to save the expense of shipping back to New York.

“They will be obliged to sell everything away below cost to save the expense of shipping back to New York.”

The displacement of established businesses by building sales remains a constant friction in Tacoma's downtown corridor. Like the Star Clothing Co. in 1904, modern retailers often find that changing property ownership can trigger a sudden end to local storefronts.
