Two-Year-Old Vanishes in Seattle Kidnapping Mystery

A young child disappeared from a forested area near a popular summer resort, leaving behind a frantic search and local detectives suspecting foul play.

SEATTLE, May 7.—Yesterday morning the two-year-old son of H. D. Hake disappeared in a mysterious manner. The mother was with the child at Eagle Harbor, a summer resort, and as they were passing through a small growth of trees he disappeared. All day and night a searching party scoured the island but found no clue. The Pinkerton detectives, who are also working on the case, say it is another case of kidnapping.

Kidnapping cases in the early 20th century were often treated with a sensationalism that persists in modern media crime reporting. Today's amber alerts and digital tracking methods contrast sharply with the desperate physical search parties of 1904, though the community panic surrounding the disappearance of a child remains unchanged.
