A Vengeful Killing at the Freight Yards

An insurance solicitor was tracked down and murdered by a client following a bitter dispute over a lapsed policy, sparking a massive manhunt across Tacoma.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Charles S. Gray, an insurance solicitor for the Fidelity Mutual Aid society, was murdered last night in the Northern Pacific freight yards on Puyallup Avenue. Gray had been seen earlier at his office in the California building with an Italian man who served as his interpreter. Investigators believe the motive stems from a dispute over a lapsed insurance policy. Following a streetcar accident, the man had demanded a settlement from the insurance company, which was refused, leading to a long-standing vendetta against Gray. Witnesses saw the two men at the freight yards shortly before 8 o'clock. A railroad employee, Samuel H. Rockwell, witnessed the attack, hearing a shot and seeing the assailant throw Gray's head against a rail before firing a second, fatal shot at point-blank range. The murderer fled toward the Puyallup River, eluding a posse of pursuers. Police are currently scouring the area between Tacoma and Seattle, suspecting the man may be hiding among Italian labor camps along the route.

“The pistol had been so close to the head that the face was powder burned.”

The Northern Pacific freight yards along the Puyallup River were once the industrial heart of the city's waterfront. Today, this area has been largely transformed into industrial and logistics corridors, but the specter of the 'company town' and the tension between immigrant labor and corporate insurance agents highlights the volatile social stratification of Tacoma in 1904.
