The Dredger Pacific Resurfaces

A industrial mishap in the Sound leads to a dramatic recovery of a sunken dredger.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The dredger Pacific, which went down to the bottom of the Sound last Wednesday night, is now afloat. Yesterday afternoon at low tide the tug Fearless, together with another pumping apparatus on a scow, emptied the hull of water, and then the dredger gradually rose to the surface. The Pacific will be docked and a general overhauling given her. It is thought that the salt water has damaged her machinery, and a loss of several thousand dollars to the owners will be the result.

“The dredger gradually rose to the surface.”

Industrial activity on the Tacoma waterfront was the lifeblood of the city. Dredging was essential to keep the harbor deep enough for large vessels, an ongoing necessity that continues to shape Tacoma's maritime infrastructure and regulatory debates today.
