Vanderbilt Land Deal on Commerce Street

The Pacific Trust Company acquires a downtown building from George and Edith Stuyvesant Vanderbilt.

A real estate deal of considerable magnitude was recorded today in the auditor's office when George W. Vanderbilt and Edith Stuyvesant Vanderbilt, his wife, conveyed to the Pacific Trust company of Tacoma a block of land 30x100 feet, situated on Commerce street, for a consideration of $50,000. The building on the property is occupied by the Standard House Furnishing company and the transfer is made subject to the right of the company to occupy the premises according to its lease, which extends five years from November, 1902.

“A real estate deal of considerable magnitude was recorded today.”

Commerce Street remains a core corridor in downtown Tacoma today. This transaction illustrates how early 20th-century development was often driven by outside wealth—in this case, the famous Vanderbilt family—shaping the ownership of local commercial real estate.
