An Insult to the Convention: A Political Schism in Yakima

A candidate for County Auditor takes public offense after his party central committee replaces him on the ticket without his consent.

I wish to take this opportunity to state to the people of Yakima county that the county people’s party central committee have taken advantage of my necessary absence from Yakima and without consulting me in any way in reference to the matter have declared the office of auditor vacant upon the ticket and placed the name of Mr. B. F. Vaughn upon the ticket in place of mine. This action they had no power or authority to take, if I am rightly informed, and is a direct insult to me and the convention that placed me in nomination. I wish to make this announcement in order to have the people know the truth, and that I am for right and justice to all men first, last and always. Yours truly, L. C. Read.

“This action... is a direct insult to me and the convention that placed me in nomination.”

Internal party squabbles over ballot placement are as old as the county itself. While local political infrastructure has modernized, the tension between grassroots convention choices and the strategic machinations of central committees remains a common feature of Yakima political discourse.
