Road Supervisor Jailed for Embezzlement

A local official faces charges after allegedly pocketing road tax cash and failing to perform the required public works.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

W. Thompson, former supervisor of road district No. 1 and a well-known Eureka Flat farmer, was arrested late yesterday evening on the charge of embezzling over $500 of county funds while supervisor. Thompson's method was to issue work receipts in lieu of cash receipts when cash was paid for road taxes, then failing to work out the amount. The discrepancy was discovered a few days ago by the commissioners when residents of district 31 complained that no work had been done on the roads of that district this year. Thompson was summoned before the commissioners a few days ago and confessed he was short, but promised to make it good. Day after day went by without the promise being kept, and yesterday, as he was on the streets under the influence of liquor, the commissioners decided to have him arrested. He is confined in the county jail. Thompson was appointed supervisor in January 1902; it is said he has squandered the appropriated money in dissipation.

“Thompson's method was to issue work receipts in lieu of cash receipts, where cash was paid for road taxes and failing to work out the amount.”
