The Mysterious Disappearance of a Local Merchant

A prominent businessman's sudden departure from Walla Walla, accompanied by a secret property transfer, kept the town guessing until a letter from San Francisco arrived.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The disappearance and whereabouts of J. W. Esteb, the well-known farmer and former Walla Walla business man, who left the city several weeks ago under rather mysterious circumstances, have been explained. Mr. Esteb went from Walla Walla to San Francisco, where he entered a hospital to be treated for a rupture which has given him considerable trouble during the past year. It was to seek treatment that he left Walla Walla, and in a letter to his son, William Esteb, he said he expects to return to Walla Walla shortly, or as soon as he is well. He has been out of the hospital for 10 days and is feeding fairly well. The deeding over of all his property to his family on the eve of his departure was to guard against any possible entanglement of his affairs in case the treatment he subjected himself to under the surgeon's knife resulted unfavorably.

“The deeding over of all his property to his family on the eve of his departure was to guard against any possible entanglement of his affairs in case the treatment he subjected himself to... resulted unfavorably.”

Today, we might view such a sudden 'disappearance' through the lens of digital privacy, but in 1903, a man dropping off the map was an immediate, visceral civic concern. The community's suspicion reveals just how tight-knit the economic and social fabric of Walla Walla was, where property transfers were public affairs and 'mysterious circumstances' could spark town-wide gossip.
