The City That Slid Away: Seattle’s Front Street Disaster of 1876

As the city expands up its steep hills, a critical retaining wall on Front Street collapses under the weight of new development, leaving officials to wonder if Seattle is building itself into a disaster.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

AN OVERMUCH — The retaining cribbing on the grade on Front street, between Columbia and Marion streets, commenced sliding yesterday, and by evening had given away a foot or more, with a fair prospect of an extensive slide. The cribbing here is about twenty feet high, and should it give way from the tremendous pressure which it has to sustain, it would be most unfortunate.

It is clearly evident that this probable mishap might have been avoided, had the parties who gave the specifications for the contract anticipated the necessity of having the ties thirty instead of ten feet. They should have been, but it is of no use to make a useless ad over what cannot be helped, and it now behooves our city fathers to see that the remainder of the work is done properly.

This 1876 account of Seattle's Front Street sliding into the Duwamish River captures the fundamental tension of early Seattle: building a metropolis on unstable, steep terrain. The collapse of the retaining wall due to underspecified materials mirrors modern concerns about infrastructure resilience in earthquake-prone zones and the high cost of cutting corners in urban development.
