Major Land Deal in the Valley
A prominent local farmer secures a 560-acre estate in one of the largest real estate transactions of the season.
One of the biggest deals in farm lands to be made in recent months will be closed tomorrow when D. H. Wilsey, a prominent Yellow Hawk farmer, will pay over to Mike Toner $33,600 for his 560-acre farm located on the Cottonwood, eight miles southeast of Walla Walla. The sale has been practically closed, only the formal signing of the deeds being necessary for Mr. Wilsey to become the owner of one of the finest farms in the Walla Walla valley. The sale will be on a strictly cash basis and was made through the real estate firm of Worth Lamb. The deal includes only the bare land and improvements, which are excellent, Mr. Toner being conceded to have one of the finest appointed residences and farm buildings in the valley. Mr. Toner retains all the farming implements and stock.
“One of the biggest deals in farm lands to be made in recent months will be closed tomorrow.”
Land speculation and consolidation in the Walla Walla Valley defined the region's early agricultural economy, much like today's concerns over corporate farmland ownership and skyrocketing property valuations. The $33,600 price point in 1903 represents a massive capital investment for the era.
