College in Mourning After Sudden Death

A tragic appendicitis operation claims the life of Whitman Academy student Caroline Bassett, bringing grief to the campus.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The flag at half-mast this morning conveyed to the students the sad news of the death of Miss Caroline Bassett, a member of the third-year class of Whitman Academy. Chapel services this morning opened with 'Nearer My God to Thee.' President Penrose announced the death, stating, 'It is a very unusual thing in our life to announce the death of one of our number. The sorrow comes to us all. Whether the face is an old one or one familiar to us, we feel under a shadow.' Miss Bassett died in this city at 3 o'clock this morning following an operation for appendicitis performed last Monday. She had recently come to Whitman from Washtucna and was the daughter of Representative Bassett of Adams County.

“Whether the face is an old one or one familiar to us we feel under a shadow.”

Before antibiotics, common conditions like appendicitis were frequently fatal, turning routine health issues into community-wide tragedies. The somber reaction of the college reflects how deeply integrated and intimate local institutions were in the early 1900s compared to the decentralized nature of modern life.
