Seattle, Oct. 31 — Jay and Start Humes, sons of Mayor Thomas Humes, are in jail. Jay forged his father's name and tried to pass the worthless paper, while Start offered to go bail for his brother, but the police sergeant in charge refused to accept his offer. Start thereupon jumped at the sergeant and struck him. The officer then locked him in the cell with his brother. Mayor Humes says: 'Let the law take its course.'
“Let the law take its course.”
Public scrutiny of local politicians' families remains a staple of civic life. While the 'law and order' rhetoric used by Mayor Humes is classic, the incident highlights the ongoing tension between political dynasties and the city police.
