Commissioners Weigh $10,000 for Stubblefield Home
Walla Walla County Commissioners face a showdown over a $10,000 appropriation for a proposed charitable home as taxpayers threaten legal action.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Whether the board of county commissioners is to appropriate the sum of $10,000 for the proposed Stubblefield home will probably be decided at the next session of the board, which commences Monday morning. Petitions which were circulated throughout the city and county asking the board to appropriate the sum stated have all been returned and the matter will come up for final disposition at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. Alongside the petitions to help the board to arrive at a decision will be the remonstrance of Waitsburg and east-end-of-the-county taxpayers who are opposed to the appropriation and who, through their spokesman, Attorney Ormsbee, of Waitsburg, served notice on the board that if the sum was appropriated, injunction proceedings would be commenced against Auditor Honeycutt from issuing the warrant and Treasurer Hawley from paying it. Members of the board have expressed themselves as expecting condemnation, whichever way they decide, so they say the fear of popular disfavor will have little influence in their arriving at a decision.
“Members of the board have expressed themselves as expecting condemnation, whichever way they decide.”
The tension between municipal spending on social welfare and the resistance of outlying taxpayer districts remains a perennial theme in local governance. This struggle over the Stubblefield Home highlights the enduring difficulty of building civic infrastructure in the face of localized fiscal opposition.
