The Walnut Grove Tax Swindler

An imposter is visiting homes in the Walnut Grove addition, masquerading as a deputy treasurer to shake down residents for fake tax debts.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Information was received at the county treasurer's office this afternoon that an unknown man has been trying to collect taxes from the residents of Walnut Grove addition. It appears that the man in some way has ascertained the amount of taxes that are due on the property in that addition, and going to the residences, informs the parties that he is a deputy tax collector and had been sent by the county treasurer to collect the delinquent taxes. So far as can be ascertained he has not been able to get any one to pay him any money. He is said to be a stranger. The police have been informed and they are looking for the individual.

“It appears that the man in some way has ascertained the amount of taxes that are due on the property in that addition.”
