Fire Leaves Hoquiam Family With Only the Clothes on Their Backs

A house fire in Hoquiam destroyed everything after a stove mishap left the home in ruins while the couple attended a local concert.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Sunday evening, the house of Frank Moore at Hoquiam, together with its contents, was totally destroyed by fire. Early in the evening, Mr. Moore, accompanied by his wife, left the house to attend the concert at the Hoquiam Hotel. During his absence, the fire which had been left in the sitting room stove communicated to the floor and walls, and was not discovered until the return of Mr. Moore about 9:30 p.m. The room being tightly closed prevented the flames from breaking out, but when the door was opened the whole room broke into a blaze, and all efforts to save effects were futile. The fire department was promptly on the scene, but there was not sufficient hose to reach the blazing building. Mr. and Mrs. Moore lost everything except the clothes they wore. The loss is placed at $1,300, on which there was an insurance of $800.

“The room being tightly closed prevented the flames from breaking out, but when the door was opened the whole room broke into a blaze.”

Residential fire safety was a major civic concern in 1890s Grays Harbor, where wooden construction and limited municipal water infrastructure frequently turned small mishaps into total losses. Today, while building codes and fire suppression technology have drastically reduced these risks, the vulnerability of working families to sudden, catastrophic loss remains a poignant, recurring theme.
