The Charred Remains of a Pioneer: A Tragic Fire on Commercial Street

In the early days of Seattle, fire was the city's greatest enemy. On October 6, 1876, a blaze swept through the heart of the business district, claiming the life of a man named Hilder and destroying property near Jamison & Prescott.

SEATTLE, Oct. 6.—About 9 o'clock this morning a fire was discovered in the building occupied by Mr. Griffin, located on Commercial Street. Within half an hour the flames had completely enveloped the factory and extended to the roofs of the buildings. About four o'clock the fire raged furiously and commenced from the corner of Virginia Street to the brick building of Jamison & Prescott, roaring in the face of a storm, and it seemed as though a large portion of the town would be swept away; but there was not a breath of wind, and the fire was got under control, and at five o'clock all danger of a dangerous conflagration had passed. The loss is estimated to amount to about $10,000. A man named Hilder, employed by Mr. Griffin, was burned. His charred remains were dug out of the debris this afternoon. No other casualties.

This 1876 report captures Seattle's existential dread of fire, a threat that defined its urban planning and architecture long before the Great Fire of 1889. The mention of 'Commercial Street' and 'Virginia Street' places us in the exact footprint of the modern Pioneer Square district, where brick buildings were erected specifically to survive the infernos that once threatened to wipe the city off the map.
