The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
The republican county convention for the selection of ten delegates to the state convention was held at Cosmopolis Saturday. The meeting was entirely harmonious. The convention was called to order at 11:30 a. m. by John South, chairman of the county central committee. L. B. Nims of Cosmopolis was chosen temporary chairman and J. W. Divilbiss of Montesano temporary secretary. The committee on credentials reported 101 delegates present or represented. Permanent organization was effected at 1 p. m. by selecting N. W. Bush of Aberdeen chairman and C. H. Lamb of Montesano secretary. A resolution was unanimously passed endorsing the administration of Mason Irwin, the incumbent judge of the superior court for Chehalis and Mason counties, and instructing the delegates to the state convention in Olympia to secure his renomination.
“The common good demands the utmost integrity and ability on the part of the judiciary in the interpretation and application of the law.”
This convention highlights the early political machinery of Grays Harbor, where local judicial appointments were heavily steered by party gatekeepers. Today's judicial elections are technically non-partisan, but the tension between local judicial autonomy and broader state-level party influence remains a feature of regional Washington politics.
