A Burglary Charge Thrown Out

After being held on a $2,000 bond, a man accused of burglary is released when the court realizes the case against him is meritless.

Tuesday, Harvey Douglass was arrested on complaint of Charles Heck for burglary. The case was tried in Justice Roundtree's court Tuesday. Douglass was first held in $2,000 bonds to appear before the grand jury, but upon reconsidering the evidence, the prisoner was discharged and the costs taxed to the prosecuting witness.

“The prisoner was discharged and the costs taxed to the prosecuting witness.”

This case highlights the era's reliance on local justices to resolve petty and serious disputes alike. It also illustrates a rare moment of accountability, where the accuser is forced to pay for a baseless prosecution—a sharp contrast to modern bail systems where the accused often languishes regardless of merit.
