Despite the fact that the Prosser high school football team rushed the ball over for a touchdown in the first few minutes of play, the local players took a brace and converted a losing game into a victory on the Kennewick grounds last Saturday afternoon. The final score was 12 to 7 in favor of the home boys. Kennewick secured the kickoff and did not again secure possession of the ball until it had been carried over their goal for Prosser's only touchdown. The score was made by a series of forward passes which for a time had the Kennewick players guessing. After Prosser had secured their touchdown and kicked goal, the Kennewick lads found their stride and by a series of line plunges and forward passes carried the ball steadily toward the opponents' goal. At the opening of the second quarter, Lincoln carried the pigskin over for Kennewick's first touchdown. Johnson missed goal and the score was 6 to 7 in Prosser's favor. The local team continued their steady offensive work and, before the quarter ended, Lincoln had again crossed Prosser's line. Johnson's kick again went wild and the score was 12 to 7 in Kennewick's favor. During the second half, the odds switched back and forth between the two teams with the ball in Kennewick's possession most of the time. The two teams were very evenly matched and the game was a scrappy one from start to finish. The high school students were out in a bunch to root for their team, but there was but a sorry sprinkling of townspeople along the side lines.
“The two teams were very evenly matched and the game was a scrappy one from start to finish.”
High school football remains a central pillar of community identity in Kennewick. This 1914 report highlights the enduring tension between local school sports programs and the challenge of getting the broader town population to show up at the gate.
