Kennewick Breeders Sweep the Interstate Fair

Local hog farmers prove the Northwest’s agricultural strength by taking home top honors in Spokane.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

That local breeders of Duroc-Jersey hogs have stock the equal of any in the Northwest was demonstrated this week, when A. H. Poston Sons, of Carley, and Kraber Bros., of the Kennewick Model Hog Farm, carried off the lion’s share of blue ribbons on a carload of their stock at the Interstate Fair. Not only did the local men get into the blue ribbon class but they landed championships and grand championships. Poston Sons’ winnings include 11 first prizes, five seconds, five thirds and four special prizes including two championships on boar and championship for breeder and exhibitor. Kraber Brothers carried off two firsts and were awarded the grand championship and the championship on aged sow.

Agricultural pride remains a cornerstone of the Tri-Cities region, though today’s farm-to-table movement often highlights small-scale sustainable operations over the large-scale industrial exhibition model common in 1916. The legacy of these early competitive breeders helped solidify the lower valley's reputation for high-quality livestock production.
