The Berry Patch Heist
A Highlands family returns from their harvest to find a stranger in their home and their silverware missing.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
The home of J. B. Yost on the Highlands was robbed about 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon while the family were in the berry patch. Two youths were arrested in Pasco this morning and are being held as suspects. The robbers took half a dozen knives and other sterling silverware valued at about $30, a revolver, a fountain pen, and other small articles. The revolver was recovered by Mr. Yost at a Pasco second-hand store where it was pawned yesterday for $1.00, but none of the other missing articles have been found. The robbers would undoubtedly have carried away jewelry and other valuable articles had they not been surprised by Mona, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Yost. As the girl neared the house from the berry patch, she heard the back door close and later saw two young men going across the lawn. Little was thought of the incident until this morning when Mr. Yost missed his fountain pen.
“The robbers would undoubtedly have carried away jewelry and other valuable articles had they not been surprised by Mona.”
While the specific items stolen—sterling knives and a revolver—speak to a different era of domestic life, the vulnerability of rural homes during seasonal work remains a common anxiety in agricultural communities today.
