The 'Agricultural Wonder' of the Skagit Valley

A local farmer promises to transform the economy of the Territory with a miracle oat that promises to outgrow all others.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

There is a discovery in the way of grains and a new sort of oats, the 'Skagit Agricultural Wonder,' which promises to exceed all other varieties currently grown in the Territory. These are held by the landholders of the valley to be the superior choice for our soil. The oats are two weeks earlier than the common variety, and therefore less liable to smut or lodging. One could raise fifteen oats with double the yield to the grower. They do not shatter in the fields, and according to the Skagit farmers, will out-yield anything now in the market. The straw is of a different color from those in common use, and is stout and strong at the base where it is needed, and will stand our rain-soaked soil better than any grain, and will yield better outturns so as to offer a fortune to the farmer. Mr. W. Boutelle, the owner, has small quantities of these Skagit Wonder oats for sale, and those wishing to test this grain will please send their addresses to the office in Seattle.

This 1876 advertisement captures the pioneering spirit of early Washington agriculture, when local farmers were desperate for varieties that could withstand the damp, heavy soil of the Skagit Valley—a problem that still challenges regional growers today as they balance crop resilience with climate volatility.
