The Pumpkin Pie Fundraiser That Kept Richland Spirited

A Hallowe'en social for the Red Cross Circle turns into a community hit, raising funds and gaining nineteen new members.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The Hallowe'en Social and Fair under the direction of Misses Evalyn Yedica, Marjorie Caldwell, Marie Dresser, Lola Reader and Anna Eggers for the benefit of the Richland Red Cross Circle proved a wonderful success. As a result, the treasury is over $75.00 better off, to say nothing of the nineteen new members who were added to the roll. The girls had done everything in their power to make the occasion a pleasant one and to provide entertainment for young and old alike. Miss Marie Dresser, as a fortune teller, was the hit of the evening from the kiddies' standpoint and took in a good many dimes to help along the good work. Mesdames H. F. Yedica and G. Reeder ably assisted the girls at the refreshment booth, and the pumpkin pies had anything that 'mother used to make' skinned a mile.

Community-led fundraisers for national organizations like the Red Cross reflect a long-standing tradition of local social organization in Richland. Today, the spirit of community engagement persists, though the venue for such grassroots social events has shifted from church circles to digital crowdfunding and organized non-profit initiatives.
