University President Fires Football Coach Over 'Character' Dispute

After a player strike on the eve of a major game, the University of Washington terminates its legendary football coach.

Gilmour Dobie will not return to coach the University of Washington's football team next season, said President Suzzallo of the university recently. The president stated that the chief function of the university is to train character and that Dobie had failed to perform his full share of this work. The president declared the faculty does not wish Dobie to return next season. Dobie is blamed for not having prevented the strike of members of the football squad a week before the Thanksgiving game.

“The president stated that the chief function of the university is to train character and that Dobie had failed to perform his full share of this work.”

Long before billion-dollar media rights, the University of Washington was already grappling with the tension between the 'character' mission of academia and the raw business of college athletics. The strike incident highlights the persistent power dynamic between coaches and student-athletes, a narrative that remains central to collegiate sports discussions today.
