The Unbeatable Guarantee of Elliott M. Best

In 1876, a Seattle shoemaker promised that if his hand-sewn boots broke, he’d replace them for free.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

New Boot and Shoe Store. Buckinsham Heels. Celebrated Boots. We use the best of Ladies', Gents' and Children's Fine Shoes. No auction goods. Elliott M. Best Co., 110 Commercial Street. Long before the era of planned obsolescence and fast fashion, this Seattle cobbler was marketing his craft through an ironclad quality guarantee. The promise to 'give another pair in their place' reflects a Victorian-era focus on durability and local accountability that remains a aspirational standard in today's repair-and-reuse sustainability movement.
