Farmers Clash Over Costly County Services

A delegation of farmers attempts to defund the local county agent and club leader, sparking a debate over the value of agricultural services.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Sam Allard, who returned Friday from the February meeting of the county commissioners, says that the board was visited Monday and Tuesday by a large delegation of farmers around Prosser asking the commissioners to discontinue the office of county agent and club leader. They contended that the farmers are receiving no benefits from either of these offices and that they believe the money spent for their maintenance is being wasted. Farmers in other parts of the county have expressed dissatisfaction with the service received from the county agent during the past year or so, but are not in favor of discontinuing the office. Mr. Allard said that the board felt that the question was purely one concerning the farmers; that they have put it up to the Farm Bureau and the Grange for consideration and that they will be influenced by the recommendations of these bodies. The members at the meeting Tuesday night, after considerable discussion, voted to ask that the county commissioners retain the office of county agent, but to request a change in the personnel of the office.

“They contended that the farmers are receiving no benefits from either of these offices and that they believe the money spent for their maintenance is being wasted.”

Conflicts over government-funded agricultural support highlight the historical tension between rural independence and the need for organized, shared technical knowledge. Today, these agricultural extension roles have evolved into complex bureaucratic partnerships between universities and local growers.
