The Rising Generation of Pig Clubs

Adams and Benton County youth take charge of local livestock improvements with the backing of area banks.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

A big increase in the quality of swine is reported from Adams county by County Agent N. C. Donaldson. So far 28 boys and girls have signed up for a new litter pig club. In recognition of the work that the former swine clubs have done for better stock in the county, the Adams County Fair association has placed the Ritzville Pig club in charge of the swine department at the fair. Will Buscher, president of the pig club, has just purchased the registered Poland China gilt, Giant Brice 3rd, from the state college. Nearly $300 worth of high-class registered hogs were brought into Benton county during the month. These include four bred sows and two bred gilts purchased by the club members at the Walla Walla Purebred Breeders' association sale and the registered Berkshire sale held at Prosser. The swine club boys and girls were backed by the First National bank of Kennewick and the State Bank of Prosser in loans for their purchases.

While agricultural 4-H clubs remain a cornerstone of rural Washington identity, the scale of finance has shifted; the $300 investment that launched these students in the 1920s would barely cover the feed costs for a modern operation, reflecting the immense inflation in the capital required for young farmers to enter the trade today.
