A New Park Emerges from the Logging Woods

The Schater Brothers Logging Company gifts land to the state for a new park in Mason County, complete with a dance pavilion.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The state has received title to the new park on the east fork of the Satsop River, in southwest Mason County, it was announced today by H. W. Rutherford, supervisor of parks. The land has a frontage of one-half mile on the river and is the gift of the Schater Brothers Logging Company. The new park site is located on the Shelton-Grays Harbor road and is ideally situated. The donors built a dancing pavilion on the property, and this has later been improved by the people of Montesano. The park is about 14 miles from Montesano.

This reflects the early 20th-century trend of logging companies pivoting to public-facing philanthropy as their clear-cutting reached its peak. Today, these sites are often reclaimed for conservation rather than just recreation.
