A Literal Sagebrush Collision
A local man's unadvertised diving exhibition ends in a heap of sagebrush.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Clothed only in his bathing suit and his nice new straw hat, "Bill" Van Hoy gave an unadvertised diving exhibition last Sunday from the back of an auto that had more thrill in it than pleasure—for Bill. The location was near the old McGlothlen place and the car was Don Burgess’ runabout. They had left the McGlothlen place where they had been in bathing, with Bill on the jump seat of the runabout. The car was doing about 30 when Don decided to make a turn to another road. He forgot to broadcast his intention to Bill and the latter failed to make the turn with the car, going straight ahead and landing on his ear in a big sage bush. The fall bruised his shoulder, knocked the wind out of him and badly mashed that good old straw hat. Bill says he is off the dry land diving.
“Bill says he is 'off the dry land diving.'”
A humorous look at small-town transit hazards in an era before seatbelts and modern safety standards. It captures the rugged, informal spirit of White Bluffs before it became part of the Hanford Site.
