Kirkland Cannery Reduced to Ash

A second major fire in a single month has left the community reeling after the Henry Fisher cannery was leveled in an overnight blaze.

Kirkland community, across Lake Washington, was visited by its second disastrous fire within a month when flames destroyed the Henry Fisher cannery, just outside the city limits, with a $25,000 loss. The fire was of unknown origin. It broke out at 11:30 P.M. and almost the entire population of Kirkland turned out to aid the fire-fighters. Only a night watchman is on duty during the winter months, but the cannery has employed 200 persons for the past three years of its operation.

“Almost the entire population of Kirkland turned out to aid the fire-fighters.”

Kirkland has transformed from a cannery-dependent industrial outpost into a dense tech-hub suburb, but the vulnerability of local wooden structures to fire remains a constant concern for historic preservation in the region.
