Milwaukee Line Wrecked Near Priest Rapids

A freight train jumps the tracks, closing the line for nearly 24 hours.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The train on this branch of the Milwaukee was wrecked last Friday evening on the down trip when the trucks of one of the cars jumped the track near Priest Rapids. It took the wrecking train until Saturday to clear the track and wreckage and the train did not come down until the regular time Saturday evening. No one was hurt in the wreck.

“It took the wrecking train until Saturday to clear the track and wreckage.”

Rail infrastructure was the lifeblood of the White Bluffs and Hanford region in the early 20th century. Today, this stretch of the river is part of the Hanford Reach National Monument, where the tracks and the towns they served have been reclaimed by nature.
