Brutal Murder at Port Discovery

A man found slain in his home with axe wounds remains an unsolved mystery as authorities open an investigation.

We learn from Hon. T. B. Page, of Port Discovery, that a man by the name of James Tucker was found murdered in his own house at the head of Port Discovery bay, on Thursday last. The wounds were supposed to be inflicted with an axe, principally about the head. No clues had been obtained as to the perpetrator of the deed when our informant left. A coroner's inquest was about being held.

“The wounds were supposed to be inflicted with an axe, principally about the head.”

This 1863 report reflects the rough, often violent conditions of life in isolated pioneer settlements in the Washington Territory. While the identity of the attacker remained a mystery at the time, such reports were a standard, sobering feature of frontier journalism, capturing a moment of local trauma in a rapidly developing region.
